As you all have witnessed Empty Streets is now dishing out a more streamlined topic selection on a daily basis as compared to the weekly posts we made in the past. Just as we had Monday Music, Tuesday Tech, Wed Workout and Wellbeing, Thursday Travel, Now is Food Friday.

But before we start bringing out the menu in the next coming weeks we have decided to give food a proper introduction, starting with what food is all about. This is to show all of you that food is something we should take seriously and as the saying goes what a person eats tells a lot about the person who is eating the food. :)

Food as Fuel:

All foods and most drinks contain calories, which we can use as an energy source. These provide nutrients that provide us with energy are:

Carbohydrates - starches and sugars found in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, pulses and cereals. They are the main energy sources for the body. All carbohydrates are broken down relatively quickly into simple sugars through digestion and give us a fast boost. To optimize our health, it is recommended that we take over half of our daily energy requirements from carbohydrates.

Fresh or dried fruits and vegetables, dairy products and cereals provide natural sources of sugar as well as vitamins, minerals and fiber - which is a lot better compared to refined white sugar which only provides us with just the calories.

Fats - found in animal foods such as meat and dairy products as well as oils, nuts, and seeds along with other processed foods. It contains more calories per gram than any other nutrient. It acts as a back up source of energy if ever the body's carbohydrates level starts to dwindle. But is advisable to take it in controlled amounts as too much of this could lead to serious health problems.

Protein - found in animal foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and cheese, as well as cereals and nuts and pulses. It is needed for cell growth and regeneration along with repair and maintenance. It is less readily used as fuel compared to carbohydrates. Protein is utilized by the body when stores of other nutrients fall.

The Amount of Energy one person needs varies from one person to another. Normal Adults of normal weight and height usually require 2000 - 2200 kcals/8400-9240kj daily. Eating a variety of healthy foods daily should supply you with the nutrient needs to function well.

The Formula for a Daily Balance Diet:

1. eat at least 6 servings of starchy carbohydrates such as bread, cereal, rice, pasta, and potatoes.
2. at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables.
3. 2-3 servings of dairy products such as milk, or alternate with yogurt, cheese, or calcium enriched soya milk.
4. 2 servings of meat, poultry, and fish or alternatives such as eggs, beans, nuts or tofu.
5. at least 6 - 8 glasses of water.
6. 15 - 25grams of fats and oils preferably omega 3 enriched for the heart's protection.

With all that in mind I do hope that it would a lot easier to get things started in terms of daily menu and like we mentioned before dont worry, we'll get things rolling with all the healthy quick fire meals from now here on Empty Streets' Friday Food Extravaganza :) till the next post. xoxo Help end world hunger
